DAY OF CARING

Imagine having your porch painted when you’re too weak to do it yourself. Imagine having a wheelchair ramp built for you. Imagine the smile on a shut-in’s face when they get lunch delivered by a friendly visitor! All of this becomes reality through the Day of Caring. In April of each year, companies and individuals come together to complete projects that benefit people and nonprofit organizations within the community.

Day of Caring is a day of true volunteerism when our community can see first-hand the entire scope of the Davie County United Way mission…to unite the voluntary strength of our community to care for one another. It's truly a time when volunteers understand that TOGETHER, WE DO WHAT MATTERS.

The impact of Day of Caring has grown since its inception in 2003, when DCUW recruited 92 volunteers to complete 37 projects. In 2007, 191 lives were touched when volunteer completed 53 projects for those in need.

HOME LOSS PREVENTION (HeLP)

HeLP was instituted to provide mortgage or rent relief during times of temporary need due to emergency situations such as medical problems, recent unemployment, or natural disaster. Because of the qualification criteria, this program is designed to encourage and facilitate recipients to return to self-sufficiency.

HeLP is a collaboration with the Davie County Department of Social Services (DSS), Consumer Credit Counseling Services, Inc. (CCCS) and DCUW.

For information on the specific HeLP criteria, click here.  People interested in applying for HeLP should make application at the Davie County Department of Social Services.

Call 211 began in 2003 and averages 20 – 25 informational and referral calls per month. It provides access to a nine-county comprehensive information and referral service that is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The three digit access number gives callers quick linkage to get help or give help in the same way that 411 and 911 are universally recognized.

The database includes more than 6,000 health and human service programs and can be accessed by visiting www.211nc.org.  Call United Way 211 is prepared to answer a wide range of questions from “what organizations offer premarital counseling" to “the car seat law has changed, where can I get a free car seat for my child?" Call United Way 211 also helps citizens find volunteer opportunities.

2-1-1 is currently available in 27 counties covering approximately 56% of  North Carolina’s population including: Alamance, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Chatham, Davie, Davidson, Durham, Gaston, Guilford, Forsyth, Henderson, Haywood, Lee, Mecklenburg, Orange, Randolph, Robeson, Rockingham, Rowan, South Iredell, Transylvania, Union, Wake and Watauga counties. GRANTMAKING

In 2006, DCUW invested $341,100 in total program services for Davie County, once again making it the largest grant making organization within Davie County, strictly addressing the needs of our community.  Each year, dozens of community volunteers help to make funding decisions for United Way.  Nonprofit organizations may request funding from DCUW for programs that fall into one of our three identified priorities, called Community Impact Areas:

CHILDREN & YOUTH
  • Invest in the future success of children by providing safe environments and educational activities.
  • Enhance character development and self-esteem.
  • Help children achieve their full potential.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

  • Improve people's health.
  • Promote Wellness of the community through physical activities.
  • Provide physical, emotional and psychological caring to the sick, disabled and terminally ill.

CRISIS INTERVENTION

  • Provide people with the basic necessities in a disaster or other times of temporary need.
  • Promote financial stability and independence.
  • Encourage and facilitate a return to self-sufficiency.

COMMUNITY INITIATIVES FUNDING:

DCUW partner agencies as well as any human service agency, having been determined by the IRS to be a tax-exempt organization under section 501 (c) 3 of the tax code, are eligible to apply for Community Initiative Funding (CIF).  CIF funding is specifically reserved as short-term  funding for start-up costs associated with bringing a new program to Davie County or to agencies who provide a program that addresses one of five Community Initiatives: Affordable/Accessible Child Care, Senior Care, Suicide Prevention/Intervention, Teen Pregnancy in Minorities, and Transportation.
